The Hillsdale Police Department will once again participate in the National Drug Take back day sponsored by the DEA. We will be collecting drugs at police headquarters from 10am-2pm on April 30th.  We are not allowed to accept liquids or hypodermic syringes. If you are unable to drop your drugs off during that time, you can always drop your drugs off at the permanent drug drop off site which can be located via this handy search tool.

Zero Tolerance for Halloween and Mischief Night

This year the Hillsdale Police Department will be conducting a Zero Tolerance Policy this year during “Mischief Night” and Halloween (October 30th and 31st). This policy is vital for the safety of our children and the protection of property. We are urging parents to take an active role in order to assist us in this endeavor.

Historically, our community had experienced significant property damage as well as mischievous and criminal behavior by unsupervised juveniles and young adults on these nights. We also had problems with juveniles congregating in large groups in various areas of town. Parents and guardians should be aware of the activity that occurs when their children are out unsupervised. Most property damage and criminal activity occurs when seemingly harmless behavior and pranks escalate out of control.

Parents should establish dialogue with their children about unacceptable behavior or more importantly, not allow their children out without adult supervision. Parents must be cognizant of their children’s actions and behavior. Children leaving the home dressed in dark clothing and/or in possession of items such as eggs, shaving cream and other malicious items traditionally a formula for trouble.

Hillsdale Police Department Annual Report 2014

As the ninth Police Chief of Hillsdale, I have been responsible for this department since August 1, 2014 and it has been my privilege and honor to be in this position. This is my first annual report that I have completed as Chief, I hope you find it informative and insightful in gaining an understanding of the functions and duties of the department.

The members of this department are strongly committed to the concepts of serving and protecting you and your families. The officers take serious responsibility of the community caretaker function.

As Chief I have been afforded a tremendous opportunity of taking over this department with almost half of the patrol officers having less than three years of service in law enforcement. This has given me the chance to change the culture of the organization and giving all of the officers an opportunity to change the attitude of “that’s the way it has always been done”. The organization now gives the officers to be a stake holders in the organization, where they can elaborate on what they would like see accomplished within the agency and take ownership. With a team work philosophy more can be done within the community. That being said, a quote from Stephen Covey who I find inspirational sums it up:

“An empowered organization is one in which individuals have the knowledge, skill, desire, and opportunity to personally succeed in a way that leads to collective organizational success”.

George White Traffic Pattern

The Hillsdale Police Department will be launching a new traffic pattern at the George G. White Middle School for student drop off and pick up times. The traffic pattern will increase the safety of the students as well as allowing for a better flow of vehicles around the school area.

Most notably the plan will restrict vehicles from turning onto Magnolia Avenue from Hillsdale Avenue, essentially turning Magnolia Avenue in front of the school into a one way street during drop off and pick up times. All vehicles will need to access Magnolia Avenue from Liberty Avenue, Cross Street, Conklin Avenue, Large Avenue or Piermont Avenue.
